Red Dot Sight History in Sheridan, Wyoming Sheridan is a town located in Sheridan County, Wyoming. The population was 2,835 at the 2010 census. Sheridan's first gunnery school was established here in 1892 by J.D. Wheeler and Wm. Hodge. The "Sheridan Daily Herald" reported on December 25th of that year that the school had been renamed the Wheeler School of Gunnery after its namesake's death some time earlier. In 1897, A.F. Henderson opened a store at 4 Main Street which continued to be open until 1938 when it burned down due to an overflow from the local post office box during Christmas season celebrations; however, no one was ever arrested for arson as the fire never spread beyond the store building itself In 1905, General George Armstrong Custer died in action near Black Hills National Monument and his body was brought back to Sheridan where he was buried next to General John Fetterman outside of town limits; however, due to public outcry over this event and also because there were no major military engagements taking place near Sheridan at that time, Sheridan residents voted not to have his remains interred anywhere within their municipal boundaries In 1909 future Ulysses S Grant visited Sheridan while on vacation with his wife Laura Ingalls Wilder; during their stay they made an observation tower available for use by members of the public who could watch general maneuvers being conducted nearby from atop the tower In 1912-1913 a new armory and powder magazine were built adjacent to what is now Main Street in order to support increased troop numbers coming into Fort Laramie through Laramie Pass; these buildings still stand today and are used as housing for employees of The Garrison Group (an offshoot of Green River Arsenal) who maintain them today The approximately two miles long Harrison Avenue runs through downtown Sheridan and runs parallel with what is now Second Street which served as Streets & Alleys Department between 1907-1909 before becoming Sheriff’s Department jurisdiction On October 15th 1927 green lightbulbs were added along Second Street between Harrison Avenue and Elmira Driveufficiently lighted up by citizens beginning November 5th 1927 red dots began appearing all around town - this proved too much for sheriff’s deputies who began using shotguns instead of pistols since pistols could not penetrate through even single grains of sand

In 1951, when Sheridan was chosen as site for an Air Force Base due to its location near Great Falls and Lander, local citizens campaigned successfully for its creation with donations from area businesses and individuals including owner/manager Cecil Bemis who financed construction with his profits from his store on Main Street
