Sheridan was founded in 1876 as a post office called Sheridan Station. The name was changed to Sheridan in 1907 after John Sheridan, an early settler. The post office closed in 1951. The town was first settled by Mormons who came from Illinois during the gold rush period and named their new settlement Mormon Landing after the landing on the Missouri River where they were headed for California. After some time, Brigham Young's group decided to move their main headquarters away from Nauvoo because of constant harassment by mobs there which included destruction of property and even murder (see also "Mormon Trail"). They moved westward into present-day Jackson County in 1876 and platted what would become Sheridan along what are now Ute Mountain Road and Commerce Creek. In 1907, when it became clear that major construction projects planned for downtown Sioux City were going to require more than one day's work by local residents to complete properly, the town fathers announced that they would rename Sheridan if only one person applied for each change - thus giving rise to one of Cody's most famous sayings: "If it ain't broke don't fix it." In 1951, when irrigation systems began bringing water directly from Lake Mead up through Sheridan proper rather than via Snake Flat Reservoir as had been done previously, municipal services were discontinued completely within the boundaries of town limits with everyone having to leave their homes except for emergency responders; this event is generally considered to be when official progress towards independence from Cody began although informal trading continued until well into 1952 or even before then A fire destroyed most of Main Street in 1922 which caused much damage but no loss either way as people simply brought their food supplies down to Shephardt Creek while firefighters fought the blaze from start to finish In 1954 a new high school building project finally started on Main Street with funds provided by then-Mayor Donny Schmidt
