Sheridan is a small town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Great Plains region and lies on the edge of the Black Hills National Park. The first knives were made by Dakota Indians in what is now Sheridan. There are references to knife making dating back to 1000 BC. The first white men to come to Sheridan were railroadsmen who used Indian tools for cutting railroad ties. One of the early settlers, James Pritchard, used a sharpened piece of bone as a utensil for cooking and he called it a "paring-knife." In 1868, John Aikman arrived in Sheridan with his family and started a grocery store. He soon discovered that there was demand for English-made knives in America and began importing them from England. In 1902, Wm Sargent opened his bakery in Sheridan and soon became known as one of the leading bakers in the area. His specialty was Dutch oven bread baking which he exported all over North America. In 1928, Wm Sargent's son Harry bought out father's business and continued running it until it closed in 1984. Harry also founded The Gilded Cage restaurant which remains open today serving up traditional American cuisine such as steakhouse style salads and country-fried potatoes with bacon or ham hocks (the latter being served with gravy). Throughout its history, The Gilded Cage has been known for its fine German bread products along with its delicious Czechoslovakian coffee - one of only two restaurants remaining open west of Chicago that still serves this type of coffee!

The first people to arrive in Sheridan were the Arapaho and Cheyenne. They hunted and gathered wild game here until 1868 when gold was discovered in nearby Cheyenne City. Gold prospectors began arriving in Sheridan from all over America during this time, but it wasn't until 1879 that they started building their own towns hereabouts. Sheridan was one of these early built towns, being founded on July 6th, 1879 by Colonel George Armstrong Custer as Fort Sheridan. The town's name came about due to an incident where a group of Sioux Indians raided a ranch near present-day Sheridan and burned it down. Cavalryman Custer rallied his men and drove the Sioux from the area before burning their village down as well. Cowboys had been coming to Sheridan since its inception as a mining camp back in those days! When gold became available hereabouts (and other places too), things really got going for Sheridan – development started right up and businesses were born such as Saloon Keep (the first saloon west of Denver), Grits restaurant (founded by J H Grits), White Sands Mining Company Store (founded by Wm H Ritchie), Indian Head Livery stable/barber shop/cafe (opened by John D Whitehead after he bought out J H Grits'), Black Diamond Hotel/motel (later converted into Melody Inn) etcetera – all within just a few short years! In 1915, when World War I broke out, many people in Sheridan decided to stay away from combat because there was no way they could make money doing things like soldiering – instead they simply took up farming or sheep husbandry! But even though many residents chose not to fight during World War I, some did manage to do some good work helping with munitions production northeast of Casper while also working on various government projects such as building dams along Missouri River etcetera; however much later that decade when war ended officially and everyone returned home ‘normal’ again things changed once more with big changes starting happening right around 1946 when Ernest Hemingway moved permanently into town from his ranch north of Casper! He quickly became known around hereabouts for his writing skills which soon led directly to him becoming mayor of Sheridan (!), something he still holds today! Nowadays you won’t find any real big city-like development taking place here anymore; instead you have small townsfolk continuing their lives same way they always have done – grinding it out day-in and day-out trying their best not only for themselves but also for their families who live close by! And don’t forget about all those cowboy legends who have come through town over the years like Gene Autry (!), Marty Robbins (!), Bob Hope (!). If there is anything that loves football or cowboys it’s sure enough these guys – especially autograph hunters who often turn up at local bars looking for memorabilia related either to Cowboy or football stars!

The name Sheridan comes from "Sherer" or "Shepherd". The first settler in Sheridan County was George W. Smith, who arrived on July 12, 1857. He and his wife were the only Latter-day Saint pioneers to live in Sheridan County at that time. Other early settlers included Jacob Bean and his family; John Friel; Phebe Welch; John Bigham; and Elias Howe. In 1865, the Mormons abandoned their land south of the Laramie River for what became known as the Utah War (1865–1867). Many of these original settlers lost their homes and belongings during this conflict. Some of the earliest businesses in Sheridan were a post office (founded December 10, 1858), two banks (one opened January 21, 1860), a flour mill (opened April 3, 1861), a store (opened May 30, 1861), and four log cabins built by pioneer Isaac Sacksmith around 1870.
