Sheridan is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Snake River, about 20 miles north of Laramie. The first permanent settlers in Sheridan were prospectors who arrived in 1859. The community was organized as a village in 1865 and named for General George Armstrong Custer. Sheridan was platted as a town on March 15, 1879, by J.D. Banfield and others under the name of White Cloud City. It became an incorporated city on July 1, 1903. The original core of Sheridan included only a few blocks of downtown and most of the surrounding countryside; however, over time more development occurred within the limits of the city Limits which now stretch to almost all directions including beyond its boundaries to neighbouring towns such as Pinedale (now part of Keystone) and Worthington (now part of Casper). In 2001-2002 Historic Preservation Services used data collected from Sheridan's computerized Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to create an assessment report for preservation purposes for three buildings - First Presbyterian Church (1880), Fourth National Bank Building (1901), and Union Pacific Railway Depot No.(1902). These buildings are significant because they are among the earliest examples developed specifically for railroad transportation use in America outside of small communities near major railway lines or rural locations served by agricultural railroads or operated by transient operators such as Santa Fe Railroad companies during their early years in operation
