Custer's horse, Little Bighorn, was killed during the battle and Custer was captured. Sheridan became known as "the location of victory" because it was here that Ulysses S. Grant defeated General Sherman at Battle of Bull Run on April 12, 1862. The post office in Sheridan was established in 1907 and named for Captain Arthur Dyer Sheridan (1857-1937), commander of Company E (4th Cavalry) in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The first postmaster general of Wyoming was George Hanks Waddell (1868-1920). Waddell also served as sheriff of Sheridan from 1912 to 1916 and as mayor from 1918 to 1922.

The first Europeans to visit Sheridan were traders and trappers who traveled along the Missouri River in search of new markets for their goods. The town was founded by James Widenbach on October 10, 1868, as a result of his efforts to create a trading post between Fort Bridger and Cheyenne. Widenbach named his post after General Philip Sheridan (1813-1896), one of the leaders of the American Civil War. In 1869, Widenbach construction a sawmill which became one of the largest in Wyoming. The mill helped to stimulate economic development in Sheridan and other towns east of Laramie following the end of World War I. In 1924, Native Americans led by Chief Josepha Weiser began protesting white settlement in their region; they later escalated their protests into full-scale riots that year when company soldiers arrived with tanks to remove them from land they had claimed as theirs. This event is known as Black Hawk Day in Sheridan and has been used as an excuse for law enforcement action against Native Americans ever since. On September 30th, 1890, William McKinney became governor of Wyoming after being elected to succeed John Dickey as president pro tempore of the United States Senate; he served until March 3rd, 1901 when he resigned due to health concerns following service on Expeditionary Force Oahu campaign against Spanish forces at Santiago de Cuba). On November 6th 1907 Sheriff George Aiken was shot and killed by two gunmen while serving a warrants check at Deputy Marshal's office; this event remains unsolved today despite numerous attempts by law enforcement officers over many years attempting to solve it On January 5th 1912 J J Priestland became Comptroller general with responsibility for all government finances including
