Sheridan is a small town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Forks-Eagle Butte Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1887 by James W. Sheridan and his wife Catherine Gorman Sheridan as a dry goods store and post office on the east side of Sheridan River. The name "Sheridan" comes from General William Sherman's march through this area on his way to Little Bighorn in 1865. In 1902, John Wetherall donated land to the town for its incorporation and construction of a schoolhouse and other civic amenities. The first post office was opened in 1903. In 1907, there were only four residents living in Sheridan; by 1912 it had grown to twenty-one people. By 1916, property values had risen so much that the town voted to annex neighboring Pawnee City which then had a population of over one hundred people! By 1920, the population reached five hundred people! During World War II, many local businesses went into production supplying military forces with supplies such as ammunition and gasoline. After World War II ended, many locals decided they wanted to move away from Sheridan because of economic reasons such as high taxes, limited job opportunities, and lack of education opportunities for their children. However, most decided to stay when available housing increased along with new jobs during the late 1970s and early 1980s when oil prices rose significantly due to OPEC's embargo against Iraqoil production
Sheridan was founded in 1868 by American trapper and surveyor George A. Sheridan, who named it for General James Sheridan, hero of the Battle of Washita River. The town quickly grew to become a center for ranching and mining in the region, and Sheridan became one of the most famous figures associated with Wyoming Territory. He served as its first territorial governor from 1876 to 1881 and played an important role in creating both the state government and the Cowboy Heritage Museum in downtown Sheridan.
