In the 1850s, Rock Springs was a small town in Wyoming located on the edge of the Laramie Plains. The town's only industry was farming, and until around 1870, most of the town's residents were farmers. In 1872, an oil well was discovered in Rock Springs and soon after, a number of people started to move to the town to work at the well. By 1876,Rock Springs had become an important center for oil production in Wyoming and its economy changed largely due to this factor. During World War I, Rocky Spring served as a training ground for American military personnel and by 1919 it had become one of the largest military installations in Wyoming. From 1916-1918, Rock Springs also played host to both America's Cup Races which were won by yachts docked at the local wharf. In 1937,Rock Springs became home to what is now known as "The Peak" Observatory which was built on top of what is now known as "The Hill". At that time it was one of only a few observatories open to the public in North America. During World War II it served as another training ground for American troops and again from 1946-1948 it hosted international competition in astronomy called "Astronomy Bowl". In 1907, the first post office was established in Rock Springs. The name "Rock Springs" came from nearby Rocky Mountains which are visible from most places in town. In 1949, when Sheridan County was created, Rock Springs became one of its incorporated towns and continued to grow until it reached its current size. As an incorporated town, Rock Springs has been able to support itself through taxation and government services like firefighting and public education. One reason that Rock Springs has been successful is its location at the confluence of several rivers which have allowed for easy trade and transportation between the town and surrounding rural areas
Rock Springs was founded in 1868 by John D. Rockefeller and his brothers, George and James. The town was named for the springs that were located there at the time. Rock Springs grew quickly due to its location and became a important center for wagon trains travelling between the Great Plains and California. In 1881, Rock Springs became an independent city and remained so until 1912 when it merged with Cheyenne to form Wyoming City.
