Rock Springs, Wyoming is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Wyoming. It was founded in 1868 by Michael L. Barnes as a trading post on the Green River, and became an important center for fur trade and agriculture during the early days of its existence. The first school in Rock Springs was built in 1870, and the first post office was opened in 1873. In 1876, Rock Springs became the site of what is now Cheyenne County when it was created from parts of Laramie and Arapaho counties. The population of Rock Springs grew rapidly during its early years, reaching more than 10,000 by 1900. However, World War I interrupted their growth and caused a significant decline in population; however, after the war ended there continued to be a significant increase in population due to new immigrants who arrived following World War II. During World War II, Rock Springs played an important role as one of two airfields used bythe United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) for bombing operations against Japan; however, because there were no roads into or out of town at that time, most residents did not see military action until late 1944 or early 1945 when airstrikes began targeting Japanese targets inside Japan. As a result of this activity, many businesses and homes were destroyed or damage done to them; nevertheless, overall it was an relatively quiet period for Rock Springs during World War II aside from some sporadic gunfire battles between American forces and Japanese forces that took place near the airfield during off-hours activities
