Riverton is a small town in Sheridan County, Wyoming. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cheyenne, Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Riverton were the Pawnees. The area now encompassing Riverton was given to the United States by France in 1868 as part of the Treaty of Fort Laramie. In 1861, US Cavalry troopers under Colonel John Custer came across a party of Sioux Indians led by Chief Crazy Horse on their way to Council Bluffs for negotiations with President Abraham Lincoln about peace between Native Americans and white settlers. As they rode through town, some horsemen shouted "Pawnee!" as if warning the Indians not to cross the road. This event is historically significant because it marked American military victory over Native Americans for control of this region and helped spark settlement in what would become Riverton. The first occupants of Riverton were white men who arrived during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. In 1871, John Dorman began building a log cabin on what is now Stone Street in town. He named it Dorman's House after himself and his brother-in-law Captain George Waddell (1824-1910). Over time, other residents started arriving and various stores and businesses opened up around town including Mr. Fenton's grocery store which became well known throughout Sheridan County for its high quality groceries products By 1886, there were six business owners in Riverton with one hundred people living there according to local historian Aiken Wright Jr.. By 1910, only thirty four people lived in Riverton with most residents working farms or ranching out west Dorman died in 1912 without having completed any houses near where he live

Riverton is a small town in Wyoming, located on the Republican River. The town was founded in 1868 by Hiram Key and his wife Sarah. In 1904, Riverton had a population of just over 100 people and it was noted for its annual rodeo which took place at Fair Park. The rodeo has been held in Riverton since 1921. The town also has a museum which features artifacts from the early days of Riverton.
The Riverton Massacre took place on October 14, 1876, when a group of white settlers in the Wyoming Territory killed four black Americans, including one woman, as they traveled in a wagon train. The massacre has been called the "First African American Genocide."
