Riverton is on the banks of the Green River and it lies along U.S. Route 287, which forms its eastern border. The first people to live in what is now Riverton were Native Americans who hunted game near the confluence of the Green and Snake rivers. In 1868, when Yellowstone National Park was established, some settlers from nearby Carbon County moved to this area to take advantage of the new park resources. In 1871, a post office was established in Riverton and soon became one of many towns in Sheridan County situated on navigable waterways. Although river transportation was available for early settlers only through wagons orboats pulled by horses or dogsleds, railroads arrived in 1902 and made river transportation more convenient for both businesses and consumers alike. The arrival of these railways stimulated a period of growth for Riverton which continued until World War II when a high percentage of local manufacturing jobs went away due to wartime production shortages abroad. Today much of the heavy industry that once employed many locals has moved out into other countries; however, those few remaining businesses still rely heavily on tourism as their primary source revenue stream One interesting fact about Riverton during its time as an agricultural center is that most crops grown here today were not common in North America at that time such as corn (which originated in Mexico), beans (which grew very quickly after being domesticated there), cotton (developed from wild varieties found around South America) and potatoes (cultivated widely but never successful because they required cold weather climates). Riverton is a town in Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Riverton is located in Sheridan County. The community was named after the river that flows through it. The first white settlers to live in what would become Riverton arrived in 1872. They founded a trading post on the upper Arkansas River and named their settlement for the stream that ran through it, which they thought would be helpful for transporting goods upriver. By 1875, most of the original settlers had died from smallpox or other illnesses imported with the immigrants. A few years later, however, a man by the name of John Dickey settled in what is now Riverton and began to build a cabin on the north side of town. In 1877, he married Anna Lyon and they started living in what is now Riverton proper. John Dickey's cabin became one of the first businesses in town and helped to start its growth as a local agricultural center. Over time, other businesses followed suit and by 1901 there were six commercial buildings within two blocks of where today’s Main Street intersects with North main Street (which then continued east as West Main Street). At this point in time, RiverTON boasted an important trade route between Sheridan County and nearby Carbon County; grain was brought downriver by steamboats while timber was exported downriver by traders on horseback or wagons overland from Jackson Hole or Laramie City。 In 1907-1909 major improvements were made to Main Street including widening it throughout its entire length from east to west (the original alignment being 2nd Avenue south to 5th Avenue north). This addition greatly increased traffic along Main Street which led eventually to its current name – “RiverTON” – given its general location near several major transportation arteries………. For many years Main Street served as both business and social center for those who lived downtown; it still does so today……….. One particularly noteworthy feature about early riverTON are three large cottonwood trees located just east of 4th Ave between South First Ave & North Second Ave……………. These trees have been said to date back at least 50 years!
The first Europeans to visit the area that is now Riverton were French traders in the early 1600s. In 1768, a survey of Wyoming Territory by James Bridger showed that the area was rich in mineral resources. A group of settlers, led by George Washington, began exploration and development of this territory in the late 1800s. By 1876, Riverton had a population of just five people. The townspeople developed a local economy based on agriculture and ranching. The town became known for its cattle trade and its role as an intermediary between the United States and Mexico. By 1915, Riverton had a population of 20 people and it was one of the largest towns in Wyoming. The post office was established in 1916 and served until 1964.
