In 1868, the Wyoming General Assembly voted to create a new state out of the eastern territories of Kansas and Nebraska. The territory was so small that it did not have an elected legislature, so the General Assembly created a commission to name the new state. The commission chose Riverton as its name. The first Governor of Wyoming was John Evans, and Riverton became the capital of Wyoming on July 1, 1869.
