Riverton is a small, unincorporated community located in Sheridan County, Wyoming. It is situated on the Republican River, about 15 miles north of Laramie and 20 miles south of Cheyenne. The population was 1,032 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Riverton was George Wahl in 1876. He built a log cabin on the north side of the river. A post office was established here in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1902, John Fenton opened a general store here. The town later became a coal town with many mines and mills being built along the river near where it flows into the Little Big Horn River. In 1912, Wm Hickey organized a school board which purchased land from the Cass County commissioners for $5 per acre to build a schoolhouse and other buildings. The building was completed in 1914 and named after Mrs. Hickey’s mother-in-law who had helped organize his previous school board meeting that year. A new high school was also constructed during this time; it replaced an older structure which had become too unreliable for purpose due to damage done by weather conditions over time. During World War II, Riverton played an important role as an airfield for the USAAF Eighth Air Force flying strategic bombers over Nazi Germany from RAF Northolt Airport northwest of London (now Stansted Airport).
