Riverton is a small town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. It is the county seat of Sheridan County and home to the Sheridan Oil Field. The population was 1,734 at the 2010 census. Riverton is located in the center of Sheridan County on the upper Big Horn River. The first settlers in what is now Riverton were Frenchmen who founded a trading post there in 1868. The post was moved to its current location near the present day town when it became clear that an Indian village could not be built on the site due to natural obstacles such as rapids and hills. The post office was established at Riverton in 1870, and later changed its name to Sheridan until 1907 when it reverted back to its original name after World War I because of territorial changes within Wyoming. In 1907, Wyoming statehood was achieved, and Fort Bridger became the new state capital. As part of Pocatello Land Company minutes from July 20th 1907 show (pdf), owner/manager John Tilton offered $10 for any land east of Laramie which would cede by purchase from Ute people if they would move their Agency (a campground) about 8 miles southward into what is now Riverton township so that an Arsenal could be built there for munitions storage during World War I; no one responds but Tilton keeps making offers until finally he gets his way in 1912 when all land east of Laramie ceded by purchase from Utes lands becomes part of Sheridan County Some historical events surrounding this area include: On Thanksgiving Day 1906 Union Pacific Railroad workers stopped at Willow Creek Inn before continuing their journey northwards alongrailroad en route to Helena In December 1912 Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show visitedriverton while traveling downriver on his Missouri-bound train Thanks goes also to Sherman Wagon Wheel Restaurant which opened December 1916 just prior tothe show stopping at Willow Creek Inn
It is interesting to note that the first trigger guns were designed in the early 1800s. The first triggers were made of metal, but over time they became more and more plastic. When the first firearms were invented, they typically used triggers that would pull the firearm back into battery. This required a person to handle the firearm in order to fire it. Some early trigger mechanisms relied on a leather or cloth strap that was passed through a hole in the hammer head. The wielder would then hold onto the strap and pull back on the trigger, which would then fire the gun.
Riverton, Wyoming was founded in 1907 by Isaac Trout and his wife Emma. The town became a mining community in the late 1800s, and its first post office was established in 1892. Riverton experienced somerowth during the 1930s due to the settlement of nearby Casper by miners and farmers looking for resources. However, prosperity returned during World War II when Riverton’s economy shifted frommining to manufacturing. In the postwar years, riverbank development led to increased population growth and a rise in property values. By 2000, however, riverbank redevelopment had caused declining population rates and dwindling economic fortunes. Today, Riverton is a small town with few jobs and limited access to education or infrastructure. Despite these challenges, its history remains significant for its role as an early center of Americana east of the Continental Divide.
The Riverton area was first settled by the Arikara people in the late 18th century. The early pioneers used the rivers and valleys as their homes and businesses. By 1900, some of the original settlers had moved on to other parts of Wyoming and Colorado, but a small community remained at Riverton until it was destroyed in an arson fire in 1966.
