Riverton is a town in Logan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sheridan Metropolitan Statistical Area. Riverton was founded in 1875 by George Whetstone and Elijah Broun as a log cabin community near the mouth of the North Fork of the Snake River. The town was renamed afterilton Creek in 1909 and became an incorporated village in 1924. Riverton has been called "The Promised Land" for its location at the confluence of two major rivers: the North Fork of the Snake River and Illinois Creek. In 1875, George Whetstone and Elijah Broun built a log cabin community on site to provide land for irrigation purposes. When John Dickson discovered gold near Cache Valley in 1861, he decided to move his headquarters from Mogadishu, Somalia to present-day Sheridan so that he could continue prospecting for gold there. By 1865, Dickson had established three other towns along what is now known as I-10: Bridgeport (later renamed Laramie), Fort Kearny (later renamed Sheridan) and Riverton. In 1909, Riverton became an incorporated village when it amalgamated with four neighboring villages: Bear Butte (now Bennington), Clearwater Landing (now West Yellowstone), Elk Hills (now Pawnee City) and Springdale (now Greenbrier). At first, only men were allowed to own property; later women joined the village council. In 1924, when Washoe County was created from Logan County following statehood, Riverton became part of that county as well. As one of few unincorporated communities outside of Sheridan metro area during its heyday in the 1920s-30s, much attention was paid to river access and water resources which led to continued development withinrivertown limits over time including new housing developments such as Park Place Estates/ Oak Ridge Estates & Creekside Village which opened up along I-10 east of downtown in 1970 thru 2000; Town Center Shopping Center located on I-8 just east off US 191 next door to Rocky Ford Credit Union Arena since 2003 thru 2017; Willowbrook Mall located across I-8 south past Walmart before merging into Walmart nearby also open since 2007 thru 2019
