The area around present-day Riverton was granted to James Murtaugh by President Ulysses S Grant in 1886 as part of then-Governor Cheyenne Clark's "Prominence Ranch" program designed to promote ranching throughout Sheridan County. Murtaugh developed the land into a cattle industry which continues today as an agricultural community known for its Angus beef cattle products
