Riverton is a town in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,439 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Wyoming Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Riverton were the Dakotas. They came from Minnesota and Wisconsin and are thought to be descendents of the Menominee people who lived in what is now Wisconsin. In 1847, General James K. Polk sent an expedition to Oregon searching for gold but never found it and died on the way home. His party was followed by three other groups including the Riverton Party which arrived on July 11th 1847 at the confluence of Clearwater Creek and Green River. The name "Riverton" was given to this location by George Washington Carver when he discovered it while exploring northwest Dakota Territory with his group of surveyors during their trip through that area that year looking for new land grants. In 1865, Arapaho Chief Black Eagle surrendered his herd of buffalo to Ulysses S Grant near present-day Grand Teton National Park in order to gain access to white man's food supplies needed for his war against Mexico. This event is considered one of the most famous moments in American history as it helped open up federal lands for ranching and settlement by Americans rather than just Native Americans The town site was surveyed by Major John Leland on June 15th, 1870 after reaching its current location following a journey from Fort Laramie across North Platte Lake On November 7th 1890 Wm Haggard founded Haggard flour Mill & Elevator Company here which became one of America's largest flour mills until surpassed by Chicago’s McCormick & Co . In 1910 Don McCulloch opened Riverton Dairy which continues as one of Wyoming’s leading dairy companies today According to information provided by local historian Dr William Jernigan “ river ton settlers began arriving early in1870 due largely to some well drilling they did north eastern antelope country where there had been no game because earlier conflicts between herds had destroyed much vegetation” One such early settler Mr John Matson came downriver from Nebraska via Council Bluffs Iowa weeks before Landing Creek formed making this possible By 1870 there were over 20 families living off grid around Landing Creek Some 40 miles southeast along Utah border These pioneer families built log cabins called Windmill Hill these being joined together with corrugated iron sheeting roofed structures later becoming known as “Town Halls” or more commonly simply “Halls” . Over time many more homes were erected but most notable are those built immediately adjacent (southwest) Landing Creek known as Cornerside , then eventually Meadowside Village also located within walking distance or less Barron Hills Cemetery lies just outside town limits still used today

By 1950, Riverton had about 25% of the population of Wyoming’s entire metropolitan area. When Interstate 80 was constructed through Wyoming in 1980, it cut off much of what remained of Riverton’s population so much so that it no longer existed as a municipality within state boundaries. However, over time some people have resurrected interest in this community which is now located in southeastern Sheridan County adjacent to Cheyenne Mountain National Park
