Riverton is a small town in Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,798 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Riverton-Frisco, Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Riverton comes from the Creek words "rih'ont" meaning "stream," and "-ton" meaning "settlement." The first settler in what is now Riverton was George Allen. He built a cabin on the banks of the Taylor Fork of the Powder River in 1847. The town was founded by John Fenton in 1868 when he bought land east of present-day Riverton from James Cleveland for $4 per acre. The post office at Riverton was established in 1867, and remained open until it closed in 1933. The last resident to live there died on July 15, 1984. As of the 2010 census, only one building still stands standing in town: an old schoolhouse that has been used as a garage since 1997. As one of only a few townships located entirely within Sheridan County, Valley View also boasts a rich agricultural history dating back to before white settlement arrived hereabouts (circa 1860). Today’s valley view began receiving attention as early as 1862 when Josephine McDowell discovered coal seams near its center while prospecting for gold near Powell Butte; this led to her developing what became known as “the McDowell Mine” which operated intermittently until 1865 when she sold it to J Hepsiger (1821-1895) who set up his operations nearby including constructing roads and bridges across Deer Creek watershed that today serve as rural Route 613/Upper Deer Creek Road artery milepost 8 miles north of rivertown proper
