The first European settlers in what is now Sheridan County were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1785. They named their new land la Rivière-du-Loup after a local stream that they found to be navigable. In 1869, when the Mormon Battalion was marching through Sheridan County on its way to Utah, they stopped at a small cabin on the banks of the Republican River and took up permanent residence there. The Mormons built a log cabin and named it Fort Bridger because they thought that it would be an impregnable fortress against Indian attack. In 1875, Fort Bridger became known as Smith's Ferry because John C. Smith had boats landing here to carry goods upstream to Denver via the Republican River (now called South Platte). Smith also founded what became known as Springdale about 25 miles east of present-day Riverton. As early as 1870s there were small communities scattered throughout Sheridan County along both sides of the river: those near modern day Fort Bridger and Springdale; those northeast of Greenbrier; and those southwest of Belle Fourche (now Park City). These settlements developed chiefly around seasonal agricultural production - raising crops for subsistence during winter months and importing goods needed for winter living during summer months - until railroads arrived in western Wyoming in 1883 and began providing transportation services that undercut traditional agrarian methods by making cowboy entrepreneurs more competitively priced producers within regional markets outside ranching/mining areas

In 1923, all of the local mining operations were abandoned when a new silver mine opened along Interstate 80 just east of town. The once thriving small-town atmosphere has been replaced by an economy based upon tourism and agriculture since those days; however, some businesses remain operational such as RiverTON Drugs & Hardware which anchors Main Street near the river mouth during tourist season; as well as several restaurants including The Tavern down by the river where you can order your burger or pizza with blue cheese dressing or bacon wrapped dates for dessert; as well as several gift stores including JC Penney's location right next to Walmart - giving residents plenty of choices for gifts even on short notice!

In 1935, Riverton became a center for oil production with the opening of the federal Encana Oil Field. By 1958, however, Riverton's economy had collapsed following declines in oil prices and jobs at Encana Field. The town ceased to exist as a result of its own decline and lack of support from government officials.
