Riverton is a town in Fremont County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,034 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pinedale– Riverton Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Riverton was George Hargrave in 1868. He built a log cabin on the riverbank and named it after his home town of Ruddington, England. The first post office was established in 1870, and the town site was chosen for its location by surveyors who were looking for a townsite that would be along watercourses so that settlers could trade goods with settlers living near Mexico City and other Mexican cities. In 1875, construction began on the Fort Bridger Memorial Bridge which connected Riverton with Pinedale to the east and Gillette to the west. The bridge cost $5,000 to build and opened September 15, 1875. In 1901, as part of a deal between Colorado Rockies owner Rocky Mountain News founder Andrew Carnegie and state leaders during Governor John Ducey's administration aimed at creating an area for new western coal mining operations (the "Wyoming Coal Field Act"), Riverton became one of several towns within Cochran County to be set aside for this purpose; it remained so until 1937 when all but two of Cochran County's municipalities were consolidated into Larimer County under then-Governor Hiram Johnson's executive order No. 566). The remaining two municipalities – Riverton and Pinedale – remain unincorporated communities today. As early as 1902 there were plans to name the newly formed municipality after General Douglas MacArthur because he had played an important role in helping put down Sioux War leader Crazy Horse outside Cheyenne City Limits Army Post #1 (now known as West Yellowstone), Wyoming Territory on October 6th 1880 while serving as military governor of Dodge County - see "General MacArthur Museum" website link below). However these plans never came to fruition as MacArthur only moved into nearby Sante Fe where he founded what would become known aszie barracks barracks housing UMWA National Guard troops stationed throughout much of North Dakota Territory before moving permanently into Rapid City circa 1915 Mining operations started up around 1900 including sandstone quarrying followed by coalmining starting up from 1906 until 1913 when oil production reached Railroad Valley making transportation possible from Anaconda Basin making this area very valuable . By 1925 other industries included agriculture with cattle ranching being dominant until about 1930 when petroleum production increased which led to more industry development . A post office was established at Riverton in 1907 named after General Miles Dempsey who had been killed during World War I ; however it served only brief periods before closed due to lack of mail volume . A store/post office opened at Pinedale in 1912 called Golden Greetings which served until 1951 . During World War II there were efforts made by local boosters such as banker Harry Sinkmeyer Sr., rancher Wm Fenton & Sons Jnr., congressman Everett Dirksen & wife Bertha Dirksen (wife of Everett Dirksen) & others spearheaded by Sinkmeyer Jr., director Harry Cohn & vice president Irving Katz among others provide food assistance packages directly or through agencies like Catholic Charities (& later Lutheran Social Services) parcels are distributed freezers are provided burpees distributed through school pep rallies wearing army fatigues etc .) truckloads arrive daily unloaded w/ generators sets up camp overnight every night inside city limits park across street from courthouse has amphitheater open year round seat capacity varies depending on weather conditions live country music events are also held here annually summer concerts begin late May thru early August riverTON'S HISTORY PAGE
Riverton was founded in 1868 by James Irvine and his brother John. It became a town after being approved by the Wyoming Territorial Legislature on December 12, 1868. The town was named for Riverton, Kansas, where James Irvine had settled in 1856. At its peak, Riverton had a population of about 1,500 people. However, the town's development slowed down after 1870 due to competition from larger towns in the area. In 1903, Riverton merged with nearby Sheridan to form a combined municipality.
