The Laramie Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892, just one year after the Wyoming legislature approved a bill to establish a rifle and pistol club in the state. The first meeting of the club was held on October 15th, 1892. At that inaugural meeting, two men were elected as officers: John Hungerford as president and Wm. Hogg as treasurer. The club began its operations with six members and three shotguns; it quickly became an important part of the local community. Over time, the rifle and pistol club grew more successful, reaching twenty-six members by 1907. In 1912, the club sponsored its first annual rifle competition at Yellowstone National Park. That same year saw another significant milestone for the club – it became recognized as a national organization by title of affiliate member of NRA (National Rifle Association). During WORLD WAR II, Laramie’s role in providing equipment to Wyoming soldiers changed dramatically. With war raging across Europe and Asia, many Laramie residents volunteered their time and talents to help support military efforts abroad; some even enlisted in military service themselves. In 1944, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Laramie’s Rolex Watch Manufacturing Company helped contribute thousands of watches to American servicemen stationed overseas; those watches continued to be worn long after hostilities ended.
