Laramie is a town in Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Laramie County. The site of the Battle of Little Bighorn occurred in 1876 and helped to determine Wyoming's admission into the Union as a state. The first gunnery schools were established in North Dakota Territory by order of President James K. Polk in 1864 as part of his efforts to arm America's militias for its upcoming Civil War. These schools taught users how to load and fire handguns and shotguns, but there never was any real attempt to teach marksmanship from a practical standpoint. After the end of the Civil War, these gunnery schools became defunct while private individuals continued to learn this skill through informal means until it re-emerged as an actual shooting sport with inception by Denver shooters John Philip Sousa and Theodore Roosevelt in 1905. In 1862, Coloans Ezra Taft Benson and Orville Brownell began teaching firearms skills at what would become known as "Benson's Rifle School" on Second Street west of downtown Laramie. In 1865 they moved their school to Second Avenue east of downtown where they remained until 1870 when they relocated again (to First Street southwest of downtown) because new laws had banned westward migration among Native American tribes living within Indian Territory boundaries at that time. Withdrawal from Indian Territory also removed them from jurisdictional control over rifle ranges within their own county which opened up opportunities for students from other counties to take advantage of those ranges during peacetime hunting seasons only; this also led directly to increasing competition between local gunners for access to all-season range use amongst themselves which eventually led either faction or individual shooters seeking more reliable targets outside regular hunting season limits developing proficiency with handguns/shotguns before concentrating on rifle target practice exclusively after becoming licensed handgun dealers instead Of continuing NRA sponsored classes & using rifles exclusively At original Benson’s Rifle School sites shotputting tournaments were organized annually For many years prior To 1906 straight “firearm safety & Marksmanship Exhibition” operations took place Every January At Municipal Auditorium adjacent To railroad tracks Named after then 2nd Lt Gorman Waddell who represented Laramie County On October 15th 1906 finally indoor range was dedicated By Governor Charles Evans Hughes Following establishment Of National Pistol Association As recognized governing body By Executive Order No 256 dated September 30th 1907 This organization later morphed into National Shooting Sports Foundation
