A few years later, John Dalles built a store on what is now Main Street and he began selling firearms there. In 1911, the first post office in Sheridan opened with mail from Fort Bridger via stagecoach service. This led to an increase in gun sales as people could now purchase firearms at local merchants instead of having to go upriver to Fort Bridger where mail only arrived once every six weeks or so. A new store was built on Fourth Avenue between Main and Garrison Streets in 1915 and this continued until 1954 when it burned down due to an electrical fire. Laramie, Wyoming was founded on July 10, 1876 by John C. Fremont and is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States. Denny's party crossed into what is now Laramie County on December 5th, 1868 and began mapping out future site for Laramie. On July 10th, 1876 General James Haggard granted land grants to thirty-six men who would form the nucleus of what would become Laramie City. Laramie was founded as a trading post on September 12th, 1877 by JF Salisbury and WJ Bechtel. The town began to grow quickly due to its location at an important crossroads where wagon trains could access both sides of the mountain passes necessary for trade with Russia and other parts of eastern North America. On October 15th, 1880 gold was discovered nearpresent day Green River by Sibley & Haywood miners while prospecting for gold in nearby Dinosaur National Monument . The discovery led to increased traffic through Laramie and soon after businesses started opening up including hotels/motels – all essential elements for early 20th century society! In 1907 City fathers voted unanimously to name their city after Elihu Root who had been instrumental in helping organize western settlers during the Mexican American War years earlier. At this time it was still considered unusual for a U.S.-owned city in western Colorado to be named after someone other than President or Prime Minister! On January 1st 1912 Mayor Gifford Pinchot proclaimed that “Laramie” means “place where thunder meets lightning” in Kiowa Indian language! By 1916 over 60% of residents were Anglo-American with Chinese also living among them temporarily during World War I as refugees from China's war against Japan
