Laramie, Wyoming is home to the oldest gun hammer Factory in the United States. The first gun hammer Factory was founded here by George W. Johnson in 1869. Gun hammers were used to chisel guns and are still used today as a part of traditional rifle stock repairs. Gun hammers were introduced to Laramie, Wyoming by John Smedley in 1871. He began manufacturing them here as a way to improve the accuracy of rifles and shotguns. In 1902, Smedley erected his own Armory here in order to sell his hammers and other firearms products. The factory continued production until 1954 when it closed down due to lack of sales. Today, the remaining equipment from the old Fayetteville Armory remains on display at the museum in Laramie- portions of which date back to the early 1800s!

The town was founded in 1868 by Swedish immigrant Lars Christensen as a small fur-trading post on the Laramide Range. It became an agricultural center after being granted a patent for irrigated farming in 1876. In 1907, the name change from Lars Christensen to Laramie when it merged with nearby Sheridan to form what would be Wyoming's second largest city. The economic development of Laramie led to its nickname "the Promised Land". In 1925, oil Titus blocks were discovered in what would become Laramie and Sheridan counties and production began immediately. By 1930, over 50 wells had been drilled in both towns and production grew steadily until 1942 when World War II ended without any oil discoveries.
