On July 1, 1876, Laramie became the first city in Wyoming to establish a police department. The department was established with the goal of preventing crime and providing for the safety of citizens. In 1903, that goal was further realized when the Laramie Municipal corporation was created. The municipal corporation provided for aldermen and trustees who were responsible for creating laws and ordinances that affect public health and safety. It also empowered the City Manager to make decisions on various aspects of city government including budgeting, personnel management, street cleaning, fire Protection and more. In 1968, Mayor Jerald Fenton announced plans to build a new school in downtown Laramie. The school would be built on land that once served as an armory. Funds were raised through a variety of means including selling bonds and collecting taxes from residents. On July 10th of that year, groundbreaking occurred and construction began on what is now known as Central High School (now Laramie High School). Over time, other governmental institutions have been located within the confines of Central High School such as the County Courthouse which is currently used as classrooms for local school districts; Inspectional Services which provides law enforcement services to local businesses; West Bank Elementary which serves students in grades K-4; Park Place which offers soccer training camps during summer months; Asbestos Removal Service which does asbestos removal work on residences throughout Laramie; among others The current structure was designed by architects Horman & Associates in 1984-1985 using a modernist approach utilizing light metal beams with skylights throughout the building facade At its peak enrollment in 1987-1988 Central High School had over 2200 students from thirty-six Wyoming counties Today Central High School continues to serve as one of Wyoming’s top high schools offering classes from 9:00 A.M.–12:30 P.M., Friday afternoons through Thursday evenings; sixty six Advanced Placement courses including eighteen credit hours per semester leading up to college level examinations annually Laramie has been home to several gun shows over the years both sanctioned by state governments (large events like NRA matches) while also staging smaller shows without state sanctioning these shows are often considered Cowboy Days events
