Today, Laramie has distinction as one of America's "rustic" cities with its wide open spaces and rugged landscape intact from whence many cowboy legends were born including Wild Bill Hickok and Jake Roberts (the founder of Sundance Film Festival). Laramie was founded on July 4, 1881 when seven settlers led by J.D. Schieffer and A.J. Salisbury arrived from Nebraska to begin a ranch development project in what is now Laramie County. The original settlement site lay east of the Laramie River and included only a few brush piles and constructed houses made of buffalo hides and strawbale poles. In 1886, the town's first post office was established at present-day downtown Lander with Elisha Sweetman as its first clerk; it served until 1907 when a new building was built on Main Street that still serves as the town hall today. The primary economic activity in Laramie during its early years involved farming (the most common crop) and ranching (the dominant form of land management). During World War II, Lander became an important commercial center for local farmers with production of feeds for cows and other animals feeding war plants throughout western America; however, after the war ended there were no significant growth opportunities for agriculture in Laramie until more recently when oil exploration began to take hold throughout central Wyoming beginning around 1970s which has led to increased job opportunities for local farmers as well as manufacturing activities within the city limits since late 1990s including truck stop restaurants catering to truckers passing through town on their way to or from work southward along I-25
