Laramie, Wyoming is a small town located in the Sawtooth Mountains of central Laramie County, Wyoming. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is home to the University of Wyoming and Laramie Western Technical College. Laramie began as a small trading post on the Flathead River in 1868 by John D. Rockefeller and other capitalists looking for a location for their new oil field in western Colorado. The Post Office was established in 1869, but it did not open until March 1870 because of construction difficulties associated with building a railroad through what is now Laramie County. The first postmaster was Wm. Hinson. The town name comes from an interpretation of "là-ram" or "place where I make cheese." This was likely due to the fact that there were many supplies available near the flatheadRiverbanks which led to trade with nearby valleys and towns such as Topeka and Wichita Falls before production began in earnest on the Razorback Oil Field in eastern Colorado in 1901. In 1886, Captain George Armstrong founded Armstrong’s grocery store and served as Postmaster until 1893 when he became Treasurer/Collector General under President Grover Cleveland’s administration. In 1898, Laramie’s first telephone system went into service, using poles extending out from Main Street between First and Second Streets eastward to Telephone Road (now Overland Avenue). At that time there were only two churches – Presbyterian church on Main Street north of Third Street west of College Avenue (later renamed Harrisonburg Methodist Episcopal Church) and Baptist church south of Third Street east of School Avenue (later renamed Parkhurst Baptist Church). In 1907 both churches merged into one body called First Presbyterian Church & Methodist Episcopal Church; however First Presbyterian still has its own property north of Third Street east of School Avenue within walking distance from most residents today (although services are now conducted at Harrisonburg Methodist Episcopal Church). In 1912 Lamont Air Force Base Camp opened during World War I just off Interstate 90 west side near Sheridan Reservoir; it closed after three years due to lack of funding but left an lasting legacy by hosting dances, summer shows, aviation exhibits etc.; also Seelye Store which still stands today across Depot Square opposite US Postal Service Building built 1949
