Green River is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the river that flows through it. The first Europeans to visit Green River were traders and fur-runners who traveled along the upper Yellowstone River in search of new land to trade with. In 1821, Kit Carson and his party of Americans discovered Green River while exploring the lower Yellowstone Valley. They named the stream after their host's ranch some miles south of Green River Junction on the Arkansas River system. In 1869, gold seekers found evidence of gold near what is now Green River Junction when they struck a driftnet near Indianola Hill Mine NW of present day Sheridan City Limits on Nevada Gulch Road (now US 36). A team led by George Miller prospected for gold around this area before discovering an underground mine workings which yielded $30,000 worth of gold bullion in 1870 alone This discovery led to increased exploration and development in northeast Wyoming around this time period. By 1872, most all but a small amount of silver had been mined out from these locales so it wasn't until 1893 that significant amounts were mined at Sutter's Mill Creek claims northwest of Green River Junction In 1903-1904 Charles Goodyear located several large coal seams east side Coal Creek about 2 miles north-northeast of present day Blackwater Drawbridge on Wyoming Highway 12/15 mile east side Coal Creek Ferry Road between Coal Creek and Blackwater Drawbridge . These veins had not been prospected nor tested as coal until Goodyear's investigation On July 10th 1907 Ulysses S Grant visited Sheridan County during his presidency and inspected several mining operations being conducted within its borders including those at Sutter's Mill Creek & Coal Creek Ferry Roads . As he toured these operations he assigned two men to take charge over these mines - James Wickersham (& Harry Haggard) who operated North Dakota Mines & Miners Company’s Gold Mine near Grand Teton National Park Headquarters where he began taking surface assays for lead & other minerals starting on July 11th 1907;and Augustus Griggs Jr., an experienced miner who worked for Hugo Haase’s Northern Mining District which included both Gold Rush properties called North Platte (northwest corner property adjoining Ndahchee Hills), Antelope Hills (southwest corner property adjoining Ndahchee Hills), etc.. On December 3rd 1907 Wickersham reported finding rich vein @ 5 feet wide and 20 feet long grading 0% Silver!
