Green River is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by Kit Carson and his family. The name of the town comes from the river that flows through it. The first people to live in Green River were the Hidatsa who arrived about 1792. They built a trading post near where Green River now stands. Other early settlers included Jedediah Smith and his party who explored the area in 1812-1813, and US Cavalry General Zachary Taylor during the Mexican-American War. In 1863, Confederate general John Custer passed through Sheridan County on his way to battle Union General George Armstrong Custer at Little Big Horn. Upon learning of Custer's presence, many residents of Sheridanville fled to Green River for safety, only to be pursued by Union cavalrymen as they retreated back across the Holston Bridge into Indian Territory). Aftermath of this戦争 led some residents of Sheridanville to move their families also eastward into what is now Laramie County and southward into Sweetwater County in search of safe haven from warring factions. GreenRiver got its start as an agricultural community when Kit Carson started farming there in 1881 with his brother Benton Carson’s help after moving from Nauvoo, Illinois (then part of Mexico). The town prospered because it had good water access and could provide easy transportation for goods upriver to market because it sat on a bend in the river that allowed boats passage all year round without fear of being stuck or lost at high water times. In 1902, Dodge brothers opened what became known as Dodge’s Store which soon became one of the most important local businesses due to its location along Route 8A - then called Old Stage Road - linking Red Lodge on the north side with Cheyenne on the south side andboating traffic passing through between those two cities increased tenfold during that time period making GreenRiver one of Dakotan country's most important commercial centers dating back over 100 years!

In 1869, gold was discovered near Sheridan and Nome, and by 1903, over a million dollars had been extracted from the mines in western Wyoming. The population of Cody grew rapidly during this time as men became interested in riches located near Sheridan and other towns along the river. World War I brought large numbers of American soldiers to Western Wyoming for combat; many residents enlisted in military service, contributing to economic growth and social stability. During World War II, production at nearby aluminum plants increased as war demand for aluminum soared; however, these industries closed after 1945 due to costs associated with postwar reconstruction
