In 1868, the Green River gold rush began in Wyoming Territory. The first prospectors arrived in early December of that year and by the end of the month had found some valuable gold nuggets. By January 5th, 1869, over 1,000 men were working at the mines. The first effort to extract gold was made on January 10th and soon a large amount of ore was being brought up from the Colorado River. On January 15th, 1869, company president John Sutter set out with his brigade to assay the new mine property and find an opening into which to pour water so thatgold could be extracted. They failed to find any such openings but did find an opening through which water could be poured and this led to the name of Green River for this new mine.
