The first people to live in what is now Green River were Native American Sioux. The area was named for the river that crossed it—the Green River. In 1864, General George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry Regiment fought at the Battle of Little Big Horn near present-day Arapaho and Little Bighorn National Monument, becoming famous for their victory over Native Americans. The battle has been cited as one of Americas' bloodiest conflicts. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 12802 giving Ulysses S. Grant control over all Indian Territory west of the Missouri line including Green River County and green land south of that line known today as Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. This gave white settlers access to open country which they had long desired to possess as part of their own country. The major settlements in this area were Laramie (later Cheyenne), Medicine Bow, Garden City ( later Heber City), Pullman (later Provo) and Fort Bridger (now an archaeological district). The first post office was established in 1865 at Garden City; it served until 1868 when it became Laramie Post Office #2. At Laramie there was also a school which taught children from 5 to 16 years old; it closed in 1903 due to lack of students or money from local landowners who did not want schools built on their land because they would then have to provide transportation for students to get to school each day
