Green River is a small town in Fremont County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. The Mormons built a stockade around their settlement and sold goods they produced to traders along the Laramie River. By 1887, when Green River became an incorporated town, some 36 families lived there. The community grew rapidly after gold was discovered in that year by prospectors working the Snake Range. In 1889, the US government leased land from the LDS Church for $1 per acre to build crude oil wells near Green River. Over time, other businesses were brought into operation in Green River: water power plant (1910), grocery store (1912), post office (1914), and bank (1915). The first school opened in 1916 as Red Cloud Elementary School with 14 students and 2 teachers; it replaced an earlier school building which had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. In 1922, additional facilities were added including a grammar school and high school; these buildings remain today as part of GreenRiver High School. The population of Green River reached 1,500 by 1930; however, growth slowed after World War II because of low commodity prices and lack of available land for development. In 1957, construction began on White Sands Missile Range headquarters; this facility remains one of Greensriver's most prominent landmarks today. due largely to its location just outside of town on White Sands Road—a major thoroughfare linking neighboring towns—Green River quickly became known as "the place where everything is done." Kids growing up here learned about missiles from their parents or grandparents who would tell them about Project Mercury or Project Gemini launches from Vandenberg AFB or White Sands Missile Range during those early days of space exploration!
