Green River is a city in Logan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census. The name of the river was given to the town by General George Armstrong Custer while he was stationed there during World War I. The first settled area in what is now Logan County date back to 1810 when prospectors discovered coal and other minerals in the Green River valley. By 1853, over 100 people lived and worked in this area around the confluence of the Green and Yellowstone rivers. In 1863, gold was found near Lander on the upper Missouri River and mining began immediately along both banks of the Green River. In 1865, soldiers from Company D1 (2nd Cavalry) were quartered at Fetterman’s Fort on Clear Fork Creek when they discovered rich mineral deposits adjoining Green River Valley. This led tothe naming of Fetterman’s Fort after Major General John A. Fetterman who had commanded Company D1 at Lander earlier that year. By 1870, over 2,000 men were working on mines and mills in this region with payrolls reaching $14 per day for some of these workers. However, by 1875 only 10% of production came from mines but it became an industry due to discoveries such as those made at Peabody Coal & Iron Company’s Longmore mine which opened up in 1876; White Sands Mining Co.; Sunoco Mines; Garland Milling Co., etc.). In 1880-1881 a new railroad station was built just east of town on Clear Fork Creek which served as a transportation hub for goods entering and leaving Logan County until 1903 when Green River became an incorporated municipality under its own government with its own Mayor/Councilmember system! A post office calledClear Fork campground opened December 16th 1886 (no longer exists), serving settlers living along Clear Fork creek until 1912 when mail service moved to RawlinsPioneer Mail Station located east of town beginning February 1st 1913!
