Green River is a town located in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Green River is part of the Great Falls metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in the vicinity of Green River was Gideon Jacobs in 1868. Jacobsen had traveled through the area before and seen evidence that land could be acquired for farming by purchase or donation from local chiefs. He organized a group to purchase 640 acres (256 hectares) of land from David White on July 11, 1869. The land was purchased with money earned as a clerk at the territorial government's office in Cheyenne. In 1870, George Waggoner donated 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of his rancho San Miguel de la Salida to the town of Green River site for $1 per acre ($40 parce). The two-year donation allowed for construction of infrastructure such as a school and courthouse. In 1875, Waggoner sold his rancho to John Denny for $15 per acre ($240 per square kilometer). Denny used it as an agricultural center until 1901 when he donated it to the University of Wyoming School of Mines & Technology which used it as its main research laboratory until 1978. In 1902–1903, cowboy Roy Rogers performed stunts near Green River while filming "Stagecoach". After Rogers' death in 1935, actor/director Don Siegel shot several scenes near Green River during production of "The Godfather" film series based on Fortunato Luongo's novel about Italian American mobsters in New York City during Prohibition years 1923-1929; these scenes were eventually filmed at nearby Jackson Hole National Park scene where Lake Tahoe meets Snake Pass Road - see photo opposite page 1st row). During World War II many citizens served on various military units including: First Lieutenant Harry C. Bowen who became Deputy Commandant General United States Army Infantry Divisions; Captain Lewis Henson who commanded Company E – 7th Cavalry Regiment; Second Lieutenant Charles Iversen who commanded Company G – 8th Armored Cavalry Regiment; and First Sergeant Julius Baca who served with Company K – 5th Mountain Division Artillery Regiment stationed at Fort Laramie Nebraska Territory Headquarters Department Store #2 Barracks No 3 across from present day US Post Office building on Main Street corner since 1912 known then as 'Majestic Theatre'.
