In 1898, Green River became part of Laramie County when it was organized from parts of Sheridan and Carbon counties. The first post office in Green River was established in 1902. In 1927, Green River incorporated as a town under the name of Sheridanville. In 1961, it changed its name again to GreenRiver for marketing reasons and adopted the present spelling as its official name. On November 15, 1907, three men named Harry Sievers (1886-1962), Charles Wolk (1892-1980), andRaymond Pritchard (1904-1984)inosceded by their friend Roy Emerson who had founded Roper Drug Store just north of town on Wyoming State Road 154 about two miles east of what is now downtown Black Forest on an old ranch that used to be part of George Hearn's cattle ranch empire which included many miles along the Clearwater Fork then called "The Powder" because white miners mined coal thereabouts during the days when those hills were covered with snow . They drove 6 oxen drawn by sixteen mules through blizzard conditions back and forth across country for four days nonstop until they reached Eagle Butte near where they prospected for oil near Big Horn Mountain National Park today's Keystone state park

As a result of this change in demographics, many residents left Greenriver for new towns near Yellowstone National Park or outside of Sheridan County altogether. By 1970, only about 50 people lived in GreenRiver; most had migrated away since then. Nevertheless, until recently it has been one of the few remaining continuously inhabited villages within Sheridan County history

The town of Cheyenne was founded in 1868 by Swede Alfred Andersson and his family. In 1880, a post office was established at Cheyenne, and by 1890, it had become one of the largest towns in Wyoming. The city of Laramie was founded in 1889 by Danish immigrants Ole Larsen and John Prentice. The city grew quickly because of its location near Republican Party headquarters and other important businesses.
