Green River is a city in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,794 at the 2010 census. Green River is the county seat of Sheridan County. It is part of the Cheyenne–Arapaho Nation and the geographic center of Laramie County. The name "Green River" comes from the Lakota word gidigi meaning "the flowing water." The first Europeans to visit Green River were French fur traders in 1692 who named it La Riviere aux Meadows because they saw a meadow behind the riverbank where currentday Green River flows into it. A post office called Green Bay was established in 1876, but no town was founded until 1907 when Mechanicsburg was built on land that had been part of Cloudcroft Rancho de los Nuevos Mexican Land grants dating back to 1785. In 1916, George Waggoner founded GDI (Growth Development Institute) which developed irrigation systems for farmers in Sheridan and Laramie Counties and also conducted research on environmental issues such as climate change. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge named White House Farm located along present day US- 88 near Fort Bridger as America's first national wildlife Refuge and permanently designated it as such by Executive Order No. 7783 on September 15th 1925. The refuge included an area of 2,000 acres (1 km²) bordering what is now Sheridan County borders Cloudcroft Rancho de los Nuevos Mexican Land grants dating back to 1785 including land today occupied by Green River City Limits
