In 1950, Green Valley Middle School opened in GreenRiver for students in grades K-4th grade. It was one of the first schools in Sheridan County to open after being built using government funds provided through the Community Development Block Grant program. Today, Green ValleyMiddle School is one of only a few public schools located inside of Sheridan County limits that continues providing high quality education for students throughout grades 5-12th grade despite changes made to neighboring counties during this time period which have resulted in significant reductions in funding for education within Sheridan County

Green River, Wyoming is the largest and most easterly tributary of the Snake River in the Western US. The creek was named for General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War, when he discovered it near Fort Bridger. The first white people to live in Green River were Kit Carson's fellow Comancheros led by Juanita Meade and her husband Peter Meade. They set up a trading post on the south side of town in 1868. In 1875, railroad developers began plans to build a railway from Denver to Laramie via Green River. The first train reached Telluride on July 16, 1876. By 1880, construction had progressed to such an extent that the town of Green River was platted and renamed Sheridan while the tracks ran through downtown. A general store and hotel were built before 1907 when telephone service arrived and made Sheridan an important center for communication within Cowboy country as well as between Prescott and Greeley
The Green River was a natural watercourse in Wyoming. It drained into the Missouri River northwest of Topeka, Kansas. The river was named for the green trees that grew along its banks.
