One of the most significant aspects of Green River's history is its role in helping shape America during the 19th century; during that time it was one of several towns along the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad that helped organize what would become known as the American West.
The Green River was first named after the river's color, green. The river was initially a tributary of the Snake River. In 1868, it became its own separate stream.
