Gillette is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It takes its name from General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment of cavalry known as the "4th Cavalry." The area around Gillette was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. The first white person to live in what is now Sheridan County was Jesse Benton in 1858. In 1870, W. H. White opened a store here and named it White’s Store after himself and his brother-in-law John Waddell (White’s father). The store continued to be open until it burned down in 1904. In 1907, one of the founders of Gillette, Thomas J. Chaffee, started an ice cream business here that became one of the most successful small businesses in Sheridan County. In 1912, he donated land for a municipal stadium that would eventually become the home field for Sheridan County High School football and baseball teams; this donation also served as the basis for construction of the high school's current building on Church Street across from town square. In 1916, Gillette began hosting an annual cattle show which continues to be one of its main attractions today.

The population increased rapidly during World War II due to military demand for gasoline; by 1945 it had risen to 2,500 residents. The population decreased during the postwar period as petrochemical manufacturers closed down throughout Wyoming but recommenced production after President Reagan opened up the Petroleum Reserve Act in 1973; by 1990 only 1 rig remained operating hereabouts (the last one being shut down in 2006).
