At first called Forest City because of its forestation qualities, Gilbert renamed it after himself less than two years later when he realized that other settlers were using his original name without attribution. Despite being one small community for many years before annexing into Sheridan County in 1905, Gilbert experienced rapid growth during Sheridan's early days as a county seat thanks toerview from leaders including William Cullen Bryant and Buffalo Bill Cody which has continues down through today with downtown businesses like H&R Block still located on Main Street adjacent to Sheridan State University's Elk Grove Campus
