Gillette is a small town in Sheridan County, Wyoming. The population was 1,722 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Sheridan County. The town was founded by John Gillette in 1868 as a trading post on the Laramie River. It became an agricultural center after being designated as such by the U.S. government in 1916. The original Gillette Post Office building still stands and is used as a museum today. The buildings that comprise the present-day town were built between 1915 and 1917, when Sheridan County was created from portions of Weld County. The first post office in Gillette was opened on July 1, 1915, by Jens Jensen and James Fenton Smith; it served until May 6, 1930. In 1916, John Gillette donated land to build a high school which would serve local farmers and ranchers who had been struggling to find schools for their children since the end of World War I. Construction began on what would become known as "The School House" in 1918; it opened its doors to students on October 3rd that year. Over time, more than 20 schools have been built in or around Gillette; all but one are now inactive or closed due to lack of enrollment or other reasons. In 1952, the first female student enrolled at "The School House" - Mrs., Dorothy Sayers; she remained there until 1978 when she moved to Laramie with her family and continued teaching there until her death in 1984 (aged 98). After World War II ended, manyGillete residents decided to move away from agriculture because of changes happening within society which led to cheaper labor available overseas while also providing little opportunity for those living here at home (Mosesberg & Dutton 1979). Many businesses closed down due to this economic slump while others survived but changed ownership and operated under new names throughout the years (e instance: Western States bank) Many people attribute this changeover period (1946-1970) with Gilberttes loss of jobs during both world wars combined with ranching giving way to wheat production yielding lower income opportunities throughout much of America which then forced many people out into society looking for work again rather then staying put like they had before (Fletcher 1995). With limited opportunities coming back into rural areas such asGillette things slowly started returning back to normalcy although some businesses did not really rebound fully until well into the 21st century

The popularity of Gillette led to its incorporation as a city in 1912. The city limits included parts of Carbon County until 1955 when it was transferred to Carbon County proper. Today, most of what used to be called "Gillette" is within the boundaries of carbon county while some small sections are still within Laramie County
