Gillette, Wyoming is a small town located in Sheridan County, Wyoming. The population was 4,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sheridan County. The name Gillette comes from the first settler in this area, George Gillette. Gillette has been a stop on the Great Western Railway since 1881. The city of Gillette was founded in 1887 by John Fenton and his wife Emeline Purdy Fenton. In 1911, when Sherman Wagon Wheel Railroad reached here from Chicago via Walshtown, Illinois, the community flourished and grew rapidly with people coming to work on the railway and to buy land for farming or ranching purposes. The first gun magazine in Gillette was established by J C Cashman in 1912 as a store and shooting range called “Cashman’s Gun Shop”. It was located on Main Street between Seventh and Eighth Streets near today’s High School gymnasium and also served as a post office until 1927 when it moved to its current location on Second Street Southwest inside of what is now Safeway grocery store complex). Today’s building (cased by local contractor) was built in 1888 by Elisha Butterfield who came overland from Nebraska Territory during the Rocky Mountain Gold Rush days….. In 1923 cashman & Sons opened their new armory which became known as “the Arsenal”………………….It housed both handguns AND rifles………………….during World War II it served as an air-raid shelter…………………..and finally closed its doors for good circa 1966 after years of neglect…………………….. However some remnants still remain today including parts of an original wall locker used for storage ammunition……………

GeorgeGillette had come to this area from Ohio in 1869 with his father, John Gilbert Gillette. In 1881, he founded the town of Gillette on the Cache Riverbank after purchasing land from other pioneers who had traveled here overland from eastern Colorado and Kansas Territory. The townsite became an important transportation hub for settlers moving westward into what is now Wyoming Territory during the early 19th century. The town was named for George Gillette's older brother Amos (Amos) Gilbert who also settled here around 1872-1873 when he received a ranch grant from President Ulysses S. Grant that included 2,000 acres of rolling sagebrush country east of modern-day Sheridan County and part of present-day Laramie County. That year, AmosGilbert organized a wagon train carrying supplies west to Fort Bridger where he established a ranch near what is now Libby Junction on the railroad line between Laramie and Windham Counties north ofpresent day Grand Teton National Park. It wasn't until 1903 that GeorgeGillette donated land (later called "Old Town") on corner of Market Street and Third Avenue to make way for his son Amos Jr.'s high school which opened its doors in 1907 as North High School / Sheridan Junior College; later renamed North Western State University / Wyoming Valley Community College; then finally as Sheridan Valley Community College / Wyoming Valley Technical Institute after merging with other educational institutions withinaveragethe United States including Great LakesInstitute of Technology/Southwestern Illinois Instituteof Technology & Northern Arizona University - all now known as Western Michigan University In 1904, The Gillettes built their first home on East Main Street which still stands today as part of campus lore – Gilmore House/National Historic Landmark #8998A GeorgeGIllette died suddenly at age 63 while editing plans for what would become North Central High School – one mile south across Market Street from their home which served as Student Union Headquarters until 1959 when it burned down due to fire code violations . McAllister Administration Building replaced it soon afterwards . After his death , his widow erected two large granite obelisks above both homes memorializing her late husband . One reads "GEORGE GIlLETTE" & THE OTHER SAYS "AMOS GILLETTE AND HIS WIFE MARY". With every passing year (except 2002), these monuments grow larger & more detailed ; presently they are just over 4 feet tall .
