Gillette, Wyoming is home to a rich history of guns and gun barrel production. The town was founded in 1868 by John Gillette, who started the company that became known as Gillette Machinists. The company manufactured firearms and other items including blades, knives, and eating utensils. In 1903, the company merged with three other companies to form Parker Brothers Inc. This company produced a wide variety of products including shotguns, handguns, rifles, and ammunition. The company made its mark on American culture with its advertisements featuring rugged outdoorsmen such as Clint Eastwood and Pat Boone. However, the industry went into decline after World War II. In the early 1970s, Parker Brothers merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation to form Connaught Group plc.Connaught was then sold to British Gun Company Ltd in 1984 which led to significant reductions in manufacturing capacity at the plant. However, the plant continued operations until it was closed in 1993 due to economic conditions within Britain. Since closure, much of the machinery used at the plant has been auctioned off or scrapped

Gillette was founded in 1887 by George H. Gillette and his wife Sarah Ann Schaffer as a small farming community on the edge of what would become Sheridan County. The name "Gillette" comes from John Gillette's purchase of land in that area in 1869 for $5 per acre (the price at which land could be bought at). The first settler to arrive in what would become Gillette was George H. Gillette, who arrived with his family in 1887 from Hartford, Connecticut. He built a cabin near present-day town center and began trading goods and services with the local Indians for food and items they needed for their hunting trips outside the town limits. The first school was built in 1893 by Mrs. Gillett and taught grades one through five; it burned down three years later but was rebuilt using materials brought over by wagonloads of settlers arriving during the period of railroad construction nearby. In 1897, when Sheridan County became an unincorporated territory within Larimer County, George H Axton opened up a general store there which became one of the county's most important economic institutions until it closed its doors around 1938 due to World War II Japanese internment policies affecting western Colorado towns like Gillette along with many others throughout central Wyoming
