As the Gunsmoke Saloon across the street from Gillette Armory was all but gone, so too were the hats that were worn there. A popular topic of conversation in those days was how to properly wield a gun, and one of the most common ways to do it was with a hat on. Firearms at that time were not as well known as they are now, and many people did not know how to hold or use them safely. So, when a Hat Fetcher went into business in 1904 selling firearms hats, it had no competition. The Gunsmoke Saloon had been open since 1892 and was one of the first places in Wyoming where firearms could be bought and used without fear of being reported to authorities. The proprietor, James Prentice Sr., also operated an armory nearby which allowed customers access to rifles, pistols and shotguns. His son-in-law, George Wiegand—the brother-in-law of John Lennon—started another store called The Pistolero’s in 1909 which became one of the most important sources for handguns in Wyoming because they sold both revolvers (which then required a permit) as well as shotguns and rifles. That year also saw the opening of Gillette Armory where Wyatt Earp acquired his first handgun from Prentice Sr.—an .45 Colt revolver—before setting out on his famous Wild West Show tourney adventure. In 1925 Gholston Firearms opened up shop down Main Street next door to The Pistolero’s and soon became one of Wyoming’s leading firearms dealers; their stocks included everything from revolvers to artillery cannons! In 1939 Gholston merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company which made them America’s second largest firearms company! With such an impressive history behind them, hats must have become quite popular during this time!

The original Post Office building still stands today on Main Street within walking distance of most of the downtown businesses - it was built in 1893 by Drury & Company groceriesmiths under contract with then-Sheridan County Sheriff James Laughlin. The building has been used for various purposes over time including office functions (e.g., Sheriffs Department) before being donated to the town in 2002.
During World War II, Gillette produced munitions for Army General George Smedley Butler's " Texans " unit which fought in Europe.< ref /> According to one source: "In 1940 [Gillette] had become one of America’s largest producers of gasoline tanks." The town has been home to many businesses including Ewing's Tire & Auto Center, which has been in business since 1923; Gillette Dry Goods Store; and State Bank of Goshen, founded in 1912. The first post office was established at Gillette on November 15, 1881. The present building was built between 1907 and 1909 as the first courthouse of Sheridan County. In 1938, when Sheridan County absorbed neighboring Goshen into its boundaries, much of what is now known as Gillette came under that city's jurisdiction due to its proximity to Goshen's already existing commercial district and infrastructure. At that time there were only three homes within the city limits- one beingGillette School (now an elementary school).
