The first settlers toGillette were Danish immigrants who arrived there in 1868 from Aarhus, Denmark on board the ship "Rajah". They named their new settlement after their then-shaving brush company—Gillette & Co.—which they had just founded two years earlier in Rockville Centre, New York City. The first stores opened in 1869 and by 1870 all but one of the towns' residents had arrived from Denmark or Norway to start a new life as farmers and ranchers on what was then some of America's most inhospitable land: rolling sagebrush hills flanked by deep canyons that made travel difficult even for those with horseback riding skills; rugged mountains home to abundant wildlife such as elk and deer; harsh winters that thwarted any attempt at agriculture; and no water resources whatsoever other than intermittent creek crossings which required pack horses drawn over snowbridges across ravines during winter months (and sometimes still needed to be done today). Despite these difficulties, early settlers were hardworking individuals who quickly realized that this unique location would make perfect sense as a base for operations for their newly formed Shave Company—the very same business which they themselves started more than 50 years earlier back at Rockville Center! By 1912 there were over 60 businesses operating out of Gillette with an average weekly sales volume totaling $10,000! And with each passing year things got even better because telephone service became available making life easier for business owners everywhere within easy reach! The growth spurt continued through World War II when demand for products relatedto war increased exponentially due to munitions manufacturing plants being established all throughout America resulting in huge profits being generated for local businessmen alike! However despite this boom times there was one constant among these entrepreneurs: competition always existed just beyond our doors so always be ready FOR THE CONTEST! After WWII things slowed down somewhat but didn't stop entirely; instead many entrepreneurs turned their attention towards developing services such as medical care or real estate – activities which have continued uninterrupted ever since!!! In recent years though there has been an uptick in activity especially thanks to internet marketing allowing businesses all around us accessto unlimited exposure!! Gillette is one of the few towns in Sheridan County that was not founded by pioneers from Missouri or Kansas. In 1882, a group of men from Sioux City, Iowa started the first store in what is now Gillette. The store prospered for many years and changed hands several times before it was sold to P. H. Wagstaff in 1907 and renamed Wagon Wheel Store. In 1948, the store was acquired by the Swenzel family and changed their name to Gillette World Corporation. The company continued to grow until it merged with Jobe Machinery Company in 1989 and became known as Gillette-Jobe Manufacturing Corporation (GJM). GJM continue to produce products under their own name until they were acquired by Rocky Mount Paper & Fiber Incorporated on October 1st, 2002.
