Gillette is a small town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Gillette is located on the north side of the Black Hills, about 27 miles (45 km) east of Cheyenne. It was founded in 1887 by settler George Wills and post office named for him opened in 1889. Gillette is located on the east side of the Sheridan River, about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Cheyenne. The first settlers in Gillette were Eastern teamsmen who came overland in wagons from Missouri during the 1849 railroad construction project. They built a log cabin and started to trade with the local Sioux and Arapaho. In 1865, they built a more permanent structure called "The Girdle" which still stands today as a museum within the town limits. In 1868, John Laughlin opened his gristmill here and began to produce flour for people in Cheyenne and other towns near by. From there Griggs ran an groceries store until his death in 1922. After that point it was run by his daughter Mildred until her husband's death in 1959. The store continued to be run by her descendants until it closed in 1984; it has been vacant since then. The nearby community of Northfork became known for its annual corn festival which took place every October since 1907; this event is now known as Mid-America Corn Festival among other names. On July 4th, 1946, Wacoalfabrics Corporation closed its doors after decades of manufacturing products such as clothing and towels at its plant adjacent to present day Little America Mall across from Interstate 80 just outside of Gillette proper; all production ceased abruptly due to an oil spillage some miles downstream when drilling operations were completed for Pipeline No 4). Since that time much effort has been made both inside and outside town to restore historic landmarks/facilities/products fabrication plants surrounding town core including reopening of defunct Wacoalfabrics plant 1980’s & 1990’s mill #1 – All these efforts have failed but some progress has been made Recently: First restoration/remodel on former Wacoalfabrics building 1950’s 2nd renovation 1990’s old mill #1 (now used as library)
