The first settlers in this area were William McKinney and his family who established a farm there in 1881. In 1902, the railroad arrived and changed the landscape of what is now Gillette. The town was originally named "Dixon" after one of its founders, but it was changed to honor James Dixon, an early settler and postmaster in Sheridan County. The first store opened in 1903 and by 1907 had become one of the largest stores west of the Missouri River. In 1912, Gillette became incorporated as a village and soon developed into a large city with over 100 businesses including banks, theaters, schools, hospitals and factories. Gillettes rapid growth brought about some problems however; dwellings were built rapidly without consideration for climate or earthquake hazards; streets were too wide for cars to drive on them; fires caused extensive damage to businesses and homes; streetcars were not available to transport people quickly between downtown Gillette and surrounding villages; water supplies were unreliable due to hills nearby which made wells difficult to access; construction workers often contracted black lung disease from working in dirty conditions on nearby mines The city's heyday came during World War I when it produced more than $100 million worth of goods for military use alone During World War II most of what remained of downtown Gillette was destroyed by an air raid that destroyed most business buildings save for two small hotels which continued operations until 1945 After the war many residents decided that they would rather live closer to their jobs so they formed a new City Council which began planning for redevelopment which included creating new neighborhoods within the limits of old Downtown Gillette In 1951 plans called for demolishing much older architecture within Downtown Gillete while adding modernistic styles such as glass facades along with larger parks and more shopping malls around Interstate 28 . This plan met opposition from some who felt that keeping traditional architecture within boundaries would createHistoric continuity while enhancing economic development opportunities ; however , subsequent studies showed that this plan would result in less destruction then if all architecture had been demolished

Gillette, Wyoming is a small town in the U.S. state of Wyoming. The population was 539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sheridan Micropolitan Statistical Area. Gillette is located on the Flathead River near its confluence with the Snake River and it has a population density of only 8 people per square mile (3/km²). The first settler in Gillette was George Armstrong Custer on May 1, 1876. He and his family arrived from Nebraska and set up a farm just north of town on land that had been donated by Charles Goodyear. A Presbyterian church was built there in 1886, becoming one of the few churches in Gillette during its early years. The town's first store opened in 1889, operated by John Ewing and his son-in-law J.B. Sibley Jr.. In 1901, William Murchison built an elevator to service local mines; this began what would become known as "Murchison's Elevatorivalry." In 1911, Wm Henson purchased all rights to the South fork of the Flathead River from James Weir for $5,000 and developed what became known as "Henson's Strip Mining District." The area produced noticeable grades of gold starting in 1916 when Harry Pratt started working at Phelps & Mason mine #1 (now called Hope Creek Mine) about two miles southeast of town along Snake River Road (). In 1941–42, when World War II ended and America entered into occupation duty as Japan suffered defeat, some residents who had fled Hiroshima brought their families back to West Yellowstone while others moved into nearby Sheridan to take advantage of available resources after Japan's surrender. By 1945 Gillette had reached its peak population with 791 residents; however, it declined rapidly following World War II due to many departures for military service or other opportunities outsideGillette. Its last resident died in 1957. Since then much has changed within Gillette including declines in population numbers until reaching 539 people as reported at the 2010 census; however much has also remained unchanged such as its original two stores which remain operational today
