Evanston is a city in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Evanston is part of the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Valley metropolitan area. It is the county seat of Sheridan County. The first European to visit Evanston was Capt Amory Butler on October 5, 1837 when he and his party of nine Americans journeyed from Buffalo overland from Fort Bridger in Montana Territory to the mouth of the Little Snake River in present-day Sheridan County. On November 10, 1837, John Jacob Astor and his family arrived at what is now Evanston after spending two weeks traveling through Canada and New York State on their way to Oregon. In 1838 Jesse Benton founded the first store in Evanston as a mercantile post office with three clerks and twenty-eight US acres (11 km2) of land around it on Dearborn Street near Northwestern Avenue. From this location Benton started shipping goods by boat up the Des Moines River to Chicago before wagon trains became available to carry materials eastward across Indian Territory during those days of open trading with all corners of North America without government protection or tariffs! In 1860 when gold was discovered at Black Hills National Monument northwest of Evansville within Jackson County, citizens voted not to sell any mineral rights for $1 per ounce but instead develop them themselves into a prosperous town that would soon become one of America’s great centers for agricultural production and industry! With an estimated population size then numbering just under 1,000 people growth continued unabated until 1895 when it reached 4,500 residents living in 240 buildings! By 1910 there were more than 20 schools and 30 businesses providing essential services including banking, transportation including a stagecoach line from Laramie downriver each day carrying mailbags full of flour destined for Chicago; brick kilns; breweries; tannery; harness shops; apiarists; physicians practicing out-of-state while also being home to many farmers who farmed corn (a popular crop), hay (which provided power for local mills), cattle (the foundation feedstock for early American automobiles) woolen fabrications such as felt hats & aprons etc., fruit trees assorted types like figs/plums/pears/grapes etc.; dairy products such as cheese; eggs etc.; meatpacking plants supplying major eastern markets with beef | pork | chicken | turkey | ham | bacon etc.; machine shops building everything from radios & generators thru typewriters & calculators thru printing presses !!! also several churches were built during these years !!! After World War II things changed drastically as most western U.S jobs moved overseas due to technological advances & automation!! Many young men left Evansville for good creating waves throughout western Wyoming destroying much old architecture along with thousands if not millions acres (ha!) Of Rural Land!!!! Many families here still keep close ties even tho they live thousands miles away today!!!!!
