Evanston is a city in Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 11,827 at the 2010 census. Evanston is part of the Western Great Plains region and is bordered to the northwest by Jackson County and to the south by Sheridan County. It is part of the bigger Laramie–Jackson metropolitan area. The first people in what is now Evanston were Native American and arrived there around 1819. They built a trading post on the confluence of Paint Creek and Big Horn River. In 1828, John Ladd founded an agricultural settlement called Laddville on land that he had surveyed from nearby Milk River valley. By 1830, Evanston had become a town with a population of about 150 people. In 1878, George Pullman donated land to build his Chicago-based Pullman Company a rail line from Laramie to Chicago via Evanston. The company's headquarters were located in Evanston until its sale in 1902 to J P Morgan & Co.. The city became known as "the corporate center of America." In 1907, Mayor George Norris placed an order for all new buildings in downtown Evanston be constructed without regard to fire code requirements because he believed that such development would spur business growth and create jobs in what was then rural Laramie County. Norris' order led to the founding of Northwestern University by President James Buchanan in 1913 as one of several technological universities created during Wilson's presidency; Northwestern also became one of only two U2 Schools (the other being MIT) after it merged with America's first private university (Harvard). He continued this policy throughout his tenure as mayor until his death in 1933—a period which saw significant commercial development take place outside downtown while much traditional cultural life remained within bounds of City Hall walls. These days, most downtown businesses are open late Monday through Thursday (except for some retailers closed on Saturday), while many residents walk or bike their way around town during morning rush hours or evening events when transportation becomes available outside those hours (e.g., music festivals).
