The town was founded in 1887 by immigrants from Hungary. Evanston is located on the Laramie River near its confluence with the Little Missouri River. It is bordered by Rawlins to the north, North Platte to the east, Sheridan to the south and Garden City to the west. Evanston has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The first settlers in Evanston were Hungarian immigrants who arrived in 1887. They built homes on what are now Evergreen Drive and Main Street. Over time, other groups came to live in Evanston: Germans in 1915, Poles in 1921, Italians in 1925, Japanese Americans in 1942, Danish Americans in 1945 and Czechs after World War II. In 1958, Evanston became a city when it was combined with Rawlins and Sheridan into one municipality. The University of Wyoming was founded here in 1892 as State Teachers' College No. 2 (now Laramie Community College). In 1907-08 it merged with State Normal School (now Northern Colorado University) to form State Teachers' Colleges Nos 3-5 (now Eastern New Mexico University). At that point Evanston had two college campuses: one at Main Street and one at Elmira Road/Oregon Avenue (later renamed Roosevelt Boulevard). A third campus opened at what's now South Park Drive/Lake Zurich Boulevard onetime home of Northwestern Polytechnic Institute before that institution merged with UI for educational purposes (NPI closed its doors permanently on May 15th 2006). The original buildings still stand today – main building on Main Street opposite First Congregational Church; wing annexe adjacent to Masonic Temple - both buildingsfaxed over during construction of WyoTech Center which replaced them completed 1973-74 Original building patterns changed following merger; Wilson Hall facing Oregon Avenue while Tech Commons faced Elmira Road;original east side streets running perpendicular & mirroring those along West Campus boundary were replaced by arterials “street” name * street terminated after wyotech center project ended* . In 1946-47 UI added an agricultural school which became known as Wyoming Agricultural College No 1 after it moved from Logan County Kansas where it had been established earlier that year under then–Governor John Mennell (#2 state official)). Two years later UI added another agricultural school – this time called Eastern Nebraska Agricultural College No 2 – also located outside of Evanston but within Iowan Township northeast of Warsaw Junction between Buffalo Creek & Elk Hills Reservoir #1 Lake Erie monster formed during final days OFWU experiment dragged out many months because researchers could not find roots or bugs deep enough so all food would go down# Finally western half #2 college site voted upon by faculty senate members leased from city government february 1957 for $15 per acre! The next year, Captain James Ross explored what became Wyoming Territory and named it after his homeland Scotland: Ross's Land or Little America. A surveyor by the name of Miles came overland in 1827 and discovered rich coal beds in what would become Evanston Township. He named this place Coal City because he found coal there during his exploration trip. However, it didn't take long for other people to find out about these resources as well so Coal City quickly grew into one of the most important towns in Sheridan County due to its location and access to transportation
Evanston, Wyoming was founded in 1868 by men who left Illinois to found a new country. The town was named for George Evanston, an American statesman and U.S. Representative from Illinois. The first post office in the town was established in 1870. In 1887, Evanston became the capital of Wyoming Territory and remained so until becoming the state of Wyoming in 1907.
