Geary and his brother-in-law, Charles H. Ballinger. In 1886, John Sargent became manager of Pioneer and continued to run it until it closed in 1912. In 1902, a store called "The Gun Shop" was opened on the northwest corner of Washington and Sherman Streets by Harry Copley. The proprietors were Copley, Jens Olsen (owner of the Olsen Arms Hardware Store opposite), and Ira Laughlin (founder of Laughlin Steel Company). In 1916, a store called "The Arsenal" was opened at 375 N State Street by Hiram A. Smith (the original owner of The Arsenal Armoury). It continued to be operated by him until he sold it to George Ewing in 1923. He then used it as an armory for several years before selling it to Rufus Owens in 1928. Owens renamed it the Rufus Owens Armory Corporation and made alterations to it over time including adding a firing range in 1931. It reverted back to its name after Owens died in 1938.

By 1800, much of present-day Laramie County had been explored and settlements were made along Assiniboine River by fur traders looking for trading opportunities with the Sioux and other Plains Indian groups they encountered while traveling through this region during their travels across North America occasionally bringing goods back with them on their return journey (Fowler).
